La Petite Mort

$14.99

After the death of her estranged grandmother, Marisa Marrero finds herself bequeathed a surprising inheritance: a house in the New Orleans French Quarter, left to her with a variety of bizarre conditions attached. Among the surprising consequences of Marisa’s acceptance is a friendship with a man called Jack St. Germaine, an alleged alchemist who may or may not be hiding a questionable history, and a series of encounters with Elisabeth Clavier, a vampire known for hunting mortals for sport. As Marisa struggles with who to trust, she leans towards Jack, especially after a demon arrives at her doorstep claiming Elisabeth was the one who sent him. But when Marisa’s power grows and Jack can no longer provide her answers, a night with Elisabeth leaves Marisa wondering if she made the right choice.

This novella was originally published in Witch Way Magazine. It is a love letter to the vampire culture that is healthy and active in the crescent city.

Olivie Blake

Alexene Farol Follmuth, also known under the pen name Olivie Blake, is a lover and writer of stories, many of which involve the fantastic, the paranormal, or the supernatural, but not always. More often, her works revolve around the collective experience, what it means to be human (or not), and the endlessly interesting complexities of life and love. Alexene tripped and fell into writing after abandoning her long-premeditated track for Optimum Life Achievement while attending law school, and now focuses primarily on the craft and occasional headache of creating fiction. Under her Olivie byline, New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling The Atlas Six released 2022 from Tor Books, followed by its sequel The Atlas Paradox and the re-release of her viral literary romance Alone With You in the Ether. She has also been published as well as the writer for the graphic series Clara and the Devil and a variety of other books. As Alexene, her debut YA novel My Mechanical Romance released May 2022 from Holiday House (US) and Macmillan Children's (UK). Alexene lives and works in Los Angeles with her husband and goblin prince/toddler, where she is generally tolerated by her rescue pit bull.

This book is absolutely superb. I have long been a fan of Olivie Blake’s work, and this might be my favorite. The characters are vivid and compelling, and she immediately draws you into the magic and mystery of the story. The world she creates is intricately and beautifully intertwined with our own, and I couldn’t step away. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!!!

The New Orleans setting is rich and beautiful. Marisa is pulled into the supernatural world and in different directions trying to figure out who to trust, but never loses herself and never gives up. And, in the end, she defied my expectations. Elisabeth, for me, immediately stole the show. I found her history and her motivations so compelling. Jack was a complicated character who was also just fun to have around, when everything wasn't going horribly wrong. I loved how Marisa and Elisabeth interacted with him, and with each other. The three of them are so different, and face the world in such different ways. It's a short read, but so satisfying, and I highly recommend it.

I cannot say enough good things about this story. Super compelling and wonderful characters. Not surprising considering that the author is phenomenal (read all her stuff)!
